Changelog

  • Build system improvements:

    • Improved support for Cray EX systems:
      • Support Cray compilers via --with-nocross-compiler-suite.
      • By default, use the cc, CC, ftn compiler wrappers instead of MPI compiler wrappers.
    • Silenced most classic Intel compiler deprecation warnings.
  • Automatic trace analyzer changes & improvements:

    • Fixed callstack handling of OpenMP tasks for hybrid MPI+OpenMP programs.
    • Fixed various issues with OpenMP measurements via OMPT:
      • Handling of teams constructs executed on the host.
      • Handling of lock events in ordered constructs.
      • Handling of implementation barriers.
    • Fixed an issue in report writing that caused program regions to be missing in score reports of analysis results files.
  • Analysis report post-processing changes:

    • Fixed classification of various MPI functions (mostly introduced with MPI 4.0).
    • Add metric hierarchies for HIP and OpenMP target offloading. (Note: The trace analysis still only supports host-side events!)

Compatibility

The following tools are required to build a minimal installation:

  • ISO C++98 compiler
  • ISO C99 compiler
  • A “working” POSIX-compatible shell
  • A POSIX-compatible make
  • An MPI library supporting MPI 1.2 or higher (Although the Scalasca Trace Tools can be configured without MPI support, this setup is hardly useful in practice.)

The release tarball comes with suitable versions of the OTF2 and Cube C Writer libraries included. When separate installations are desired, for example, to “share” them with Score-P, the version ranges supported by this release are listed in the table below. In this case, please ensure that your Score-P and Scalasca Trace Tools installations use the same library versions at run-time.

OTF2 Cube C Writer
3.0 – 3.2 4.8 – 4.9.1

A number of additional packages are strongly recommended to make effective use of the Scalasca Trace Tools. While they are not necessary for building, some commands of those packages are used at run-time. Please find the version ranges supported by this release in the table below.

Score-P Cube C++ Library Cube GUI
1.2 – 10.1 4.4 – 4.9.1 4.4 – 4.9.1

The Scalasca Trace Tools are intended to run on ppc64, x86_64, or aarch64 architectures. This release has been tested on the following platforms:

  • HPE/Cray XC and EX systems with PrgEnvs Cray, GNU, AMD, AOCC, and Intel.
  • Various Linux (Intel, AMD, ARM) clusters with GNU, Clang, Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD compilers. Fujitsu compilers have not been tested thoroughly, Fujitsu cross-compilers have not been tested at all.

The following platforms have not been tested recently. However, the supplied build system might still work on such systems:

  • IBM Blue Gene/P and Blue Gene/Q
  • AIX-based clusters
  • Cray XT, XE, XK series
  • Fujitsu FX10, FX100, and K computer
  • Intel Xeon Phi (KNC/KNL), with Intel compilers & Intel MPI only
  • Oracle/Sun Solaris/SPARC-based clusters

Building the Scalasca Trace Tools on 32-bit systems or other platforms/architectures might work, but your mileage may vary. The provided configure options may provide a good basis for building and testing the toolset on such systems. Please report success/failure on other platforms to the Scalasca development team.
